Part III: A New Chapter in Precision Cutting at Lock Joint Tube
In a significant leap forward for our operations, Lock Joint Tube marked the end of an era in July 2023 by retiring the last shear-type flying cutoff at our South Bend facility. This technology, which had been a staple in the industry for many decades, was known for its reliable performance in cutting materials to length during motion. However, as we continually strive for excellence and innovation, we're excited to transition to a more advanced cutting solution.
Starting from August 2023, we're proud to share that all mill production at Lock Joint Tube has shifted to using flying circular cold saws. This move isn't just about keeping up with technology; it's about setting new standards in the quality of our work. These cold saws are at the forefront of cutting technology, known for their precision and the exceptional quality of the cut they provide. They minimize material deformation, extend equipment and tooling lifespan, and offer unparalleled flexibility regarding weld seam placement.
Here’s how this technology sets us apart:
- Our flying saws employ high-speed steel or carbide-inserted blades that perform a milling operation rather than simple shearing. This shift ensures a cleaner, more precise cut every time.
- We've collaborated closely with blade manufacturers to develop tooth profiles that are specifically optimized for different material grades and tube shapes, ensuring that every cut is tailored for the best result.
- The saws' programmability for ideal feeds and speeds allows us to fine-tune our operations, ensuring efficiency and precision.
The transition from punch cutting to saw cutting represents a significant advancement in our production capabilities. Previously, punch cutting required careful orientation of shapes within dies to minimize end cut deformation, often necessitating off-center or near-corner weld locations. Now, with the precision of saw cutting, we're able to produce ends that are free from deformation, which in turn allows for greater flexibility in weld placements.
This evolution in our cutting process is also a testament to our team's adaptability and skill. Our experience with secondary cutting and sawing on larger mills has facilitated a seamless cross-training of operators, eliminating any potential learning curve associated with the new machinery. Moreover, we've achieved a remarkable level of standardization and optimization with these machines. We've designed a single blade that's suitable for all products, significantly reducing process variability and streamlining setups, thanks to fewer SKUs.
