Exploring Innovation: How 3D Printing is Revolutionizing Our Manufacturing at Lock Joint Tube
As a process engineer at Lock Joint Tube, I'm always excited by new technologies that can enhance our manufacturing processes and help us serve customers better. Innovation and continuous improvement aren't just buzzwords here—they're truly embedded in our company culture.
This past year, we've started exploring 3D printing technology to see where it might fit into our operations and how it could positively impact our team. One of our most promising applications so far has been the creation of 3D printed saw clamps for the cutoff sections of our tube mills. These 3D printed clamps have provided impressive benefits compared to traditional tool steel alternatives.
Benefits of 3D Printed Saw Clamps
One clear advantage is the significant reduction in tube marking. Traditional steel clamps occasionally leave noticeable marks as tubes pass through, potentially compromising surface quality. In contrast, our 3D printed clamps gently handle the tubes, drastically reducing or eliminating surface imperfections. Although they can occasionally embed saw chips, we've seen no negative impact on tube surfaces—a crucial factor in maintaining high-quality standards.
Another standout benefit is ease of handling. Traditional clamps are heavy, requiring operators to use cranes during installation, posing potential safety risks. Our new 3D printed clamps, however, weigh just a fraction—around 5 pounds per piece—making them safer, easier, and faster to install.
Finally, the cost and speed of production are game changers. Producing these clamps via 3D printing is remarkably cost-effective, with savings ranging from 20 to 100 times cheaper than traditional methods. Moreover, we can produce a full set of these clamps in just about a week using a single 3D printer. These efficiencies allow us to pass significant savings directly to our customers, reinforcing our commitment to delivering high-value solutions.
Cutting Edge of Innovation
At Lock Joint Tube, we believe that staying at the cutting edge of technology is essential—not just for our growth but for the success of our customers as well. We're excited to keep experimenting and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in steel tubing manufacturing. Stay tuned to see where innovation takes us next!
